Biography

Mathis was raised in the south of France, the Provence, home to crags and small mountains - a perfect environment for a young Mathis to learn how to climb and how to ski. His parents were passionate about outdoor sports like biking, running, hiking, and swimming, and they would often bring Mathis along with them on their activities. Each winter holiday meant trips to the ski resort, which is where Mathis first clipped into skis at the age of three.

When studying, Mathis was already an experienced climber and skier, so he decided to explore some new and exciting perspectives and discovered alpinism, a logical route given his skiing and climbing heritage. He was able to use all the skills he had picked up along the way to discover a range of new mountains and new routes.

Mathis has enjoyed plenty of success in his young career, with many highlights. A Top 10 in finish in the ice climbing World Cup, the opening of the steep skiing line “Les 3 Chamois”, with Vivian Bruchez and Matheo Jacquemoud, climbing some of the hardest ice falls in the world such as Dame du Lac WI6, France, and Glacenost WI6 France and even some high-altitude expeditions in Peru and Nepal up to 6300m are just a few of his achievements. It’s fair to say Mathis has had some exhilarating experiences to date.

Mathis is also a well renowned photographer and filmmaker known for his ability to capture extraordinary imagery while climbing and skiing in extremely high-risk environments. His photos have even appeared on the cover of GQ Magazine and Montagne Magazine.

It’s a treat to have Mathis on board as a The North Face athlete.
